It's no secret that J.Cole is a sick lyricist, but he is one of, if not the best, at referencing basketball players and terms throughout his lyrics.
Hit the jump to see which J. Cole line scored the Ballin' Line of the Week award.
"It's J.Cole, you not fucking with just any old flow. I'm like the '95 Penny, you like Penny '04"
This line, from the track "Get It," from Cole's mixtape "The Come Up," represents just how closely Cole knows ball. Like I said last week, Jordan and Kobe references are sick, but the lesser known players being name-dropped definitely earns my respect. In what promises to be one of many lines getting this honour, Jermaine tells us how he is not a regular MC when it comes to his flow. Cole uses the metaphor of NBA player Penny Hardaway to diss those who are questioning him. Cole says that he is like Penny in 1995, another player who was unfortunately dubbed "The Next Jordan", who did stuff like this while averaging over 20/7/4 per game, while 2004 Penny played for the Knicks, averaging just 9/4/2 per game. If you're '04 Penny, you are nothing what you should have been and "overhyped," unlike Cole, who is '95 Penny, fresh in the game with plenty of promise, hype, and skills.
