Verse of the Day: Lil Wayne - "That Ain't Me"

Weezy still gets the semi side eye for Tha Carter IV, but I'd be receptive to a No Ceilings 2.

After the jump, the verse, and an artist's rendition of God eating Garfield eating lasagna.

Cut the music up please,
Yeah I should never leave hip hop,
Controlled by my two hands, they go tick toc,
around the clock, yes it’s my time, my throne,
Better know the time of day in any fucking time zone.
I’m feeling like I’m on top of the rhinestone,
pull in the ladder from heaven about to climb home,
mental thoughts are sharper than a pine cone,
in this world of numbers I keep my nine on,
and I don’t go to church because the line long,
and the preacher, he be getting his shine on,
but I know my Lord, I am God’s own,
back to my hands, tick tick, a time bomb.

This came on in the gym today, and had me racking my brain trying to figure out what song it was. I was craaazy surprised when I grabbed the iPod and saw it was from I Am Not a Human Being, because this sounds like Weezy back in the day. Like the Jay Sean hook is a sample and you could lay this on a playlist with "Sky's The Limit." In short, it sounds good.

A lot of people might tell me the second verse should be here in place of the first. Wayne talks some real shit, lamenting over hometown troubles and touching on the black struggle. It's a great verse. But this verse here just has such a pure sound to it. He doesn't try to muscle the listener, he just lays down his thoughts. The flow is on point, and Wayne's engaging non sequiturs are strung together perfectly, in that same way that made a whole world fall in love with him. The ship hasn't sailed yet mind you; there's still flashes of Wayne brilliance. It pops up in guest verses, and his own songs too, but it doesn't seem to show up as much anymore. I'm not giving up hope yet though. And don't sleep, I Am Not a Human Being was a lot better than people gave it credit for.
