#DRAKEWEEK Verse of the Day: Drake - "Comeback Season"

#DRAKEWEEK continues at KWT, with a verse off of Drizzy's second mixtape, Comeback Season.

This particular verse is off the title track, "Comeback Season". If you want to take part in #DRAKEWEEK, hit us up on Twitter. It's an internet holiday, after all. Time to be festive.

Drizzy's lyrics after the jump, and an examination of Comeback Season as a stepping stone for a young Aubrey Graham.

I got ice all over my windshield
I can tell it's gon' be a cold winter,
I hit the defrost
I never turn the heat off,

And still I'm so chilly willy snowflake

These silly billies really fail to

act as if they know Drake

Always gossipin' callin' and textin'

Magneto niggas tryna bring down ex-men
Tellin' my ex-girl tryna explain
How I am no good so go with the next man but dog
You don't know me
You don't know us
We go by the name of ATF
And any previous affiliation
They know to hold they tongue and
I spare 'em humiliation
I know you in and out
Nigga I am not playin'
Just fall back keep on escaping and allegating
And stop tryna act like you
like me and my team
Not us so you knock us
that's precisely what I mean and dog
it's forever clear
My money evergreen
My presence required in places
you have never been
it's all in a day's work that's what I am on
NBC, MTV, Viacom
And who's Continental GT is outside
showin' them how monumental he be?
One wheel one the curb
ticket on the dash
it's like e'ry fuckin' summer I
just switch it on they ass
And maaan I'm a commodity
None of them as hot as me
The industry standard
So I am what they gotta be
'Cause Drake's syllables is
like Jake Gyllenhaal
can't help it
I been brainwashed to kill 'em all
I think I should pass my own amendment
You frontin' with glass all in your pendant
You ain't livin' rapper you never have been
You a has-been a gas station attendant
Your man is a turkey you wit' a liar
I'm clearin' the air I'm a humidifier,
I'm spittin' fire,
And gettin' flyer
And what you plannin' for this
summer I did it prior
I've shattered shows
And tattered clothes
Met status quos
This is the south and I am
present when it matters most
The startin's hot but pay
attention to my latter flows
Givin' brain ain't bad girl
don't be that opposed
I flatter hoes
And drink Dom
They always ask me "Is that a rose?"
You mean Rose?
Why yes it is
I stopped trying years ago this is effortless
I'm in your house got the key to your home
I am Jeopardy asked, Wikipedia known
I am A.A. driven and Expedia flown
So stop jackin' my style
You're in need of ya own, man...

Yesterday we looked at Room for Improvement, Drake's first official mixtape, and today, we're on to the next. Weirdly enough, though he shows major artistic strides on this tape, it's also left out of the "official" Drake canon. People want to act like he hit the ground running with So Far Gone, but that does him a disservice. Comeback Season, despite a few misses, is actually a pretty great tape. It's different, certainly. Majorly different, though it's a natural part of his progression.

The high-voice flow carries over from Room For Improvement, which takes some getting used to. The Drake we're presented with is much like any other rapper; he's hoping to get to the top based off witty lyricism. Some artists, (ie Rick Ross, Gucci, Ace Hood) come to us as hard-hitting rappers with presence and personality, but not much in the way of lyrics. On the other end, there's the Common's and the Yeezy's and the Jay's who arrive as rappity-rappers, and tone it down to focus on song-making and writing. Drake clearly fits into the latter bracket. This younger, less mature Drake wants to do it all at once, and blow you away.

Though post-So Far Gone Drake is more indebted to Kanye and 808's and Heartbreak, the Drake we see here is also clearly influenced by College Dropout and Slum Village, in terms of the feel of the music and beat-picking. 40 is still just an engineer.

It may not be the Drake we know now, but it's exciting nonetheless, both for its quality, and the hindsight feel you get while listening. You're seeing the foundation for what is to come. Drake sings, and sounds quite good. Immediately after, he practically apologizes for it, explaining that sometimes he's "gotta get his R&B on". Musically, the style is more classic R&B, devoid of the cold, atmospheric, expansive sound that 808's brought to the world. As well, he discusses the lavish lifestyle that is to come, as if he's living it. On "Headlines", when he says "I know I exaggerated things, now I got it like that," this is what he's talking about. Above it all, the most interesting part of the sonic experience is realizing that this is an artist on the verge. Comeback Season got him on MTV, got him the Young Money conversations, and built the buzz to the point where he could drop So Far Gone and completely revolutionize the industry.
