Rap on the Hot 100: Tyga ascends The Throne

Entry #2 of "Rap on the Hot 100", where we look at the hottest rap songs on the radio.

Follow along, after the jump.

We'll rundown the top 10, which has been pretty static as compared to last entry, and then we'll look at the plethora of songs outside of the top 10, some that may be pretty surprising.

1.) Tyga - "Rack City" [10]

And just like that, Tyga's on top, and back in the top ten. This is going to be a Top 10 mainstay, as we haven't begun to see the extent of it's staying power. Expect TV performances in the upcoming weeks, and if that remix pops off, Young Money will be sitting pretty.

2.) The Throne - "N-ggas in Paris" [11]

Not much to say here, as there hasn't been much of a shuffle in these songs since last week. Still, Tyga besting The Throne is noteworthy. No word on a video for this, so maybe it's not happening. Too bad. A video would do wonders to shoot this back to the #6/#5 area.

3.) Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg - "Young, Wild & Free" [12]

Thanks, Bruno Mars.

4.) Big Sean - "DANCE (A$$)" [14]

Thanks, Nicki Minaj.

5.) Drake - "The Motto" [16]

Are you sick of this one yet? Surprisingly, I'm not.

6.) J. Cole - "Work Out" [17]

Still doing well, as "Can't Get Enough" gets the late-night TV push.

7.) Drake - "Take Care" [26]

Not much to say here...

8.) Drake - "Make Me Proud" [30]

...that I didn't say last week.

9.) Drake - "Headlines" [36]

The Drake conglomerate of Take Care songs has seen a few changes. His jam with Rihanna enjoyed a healthy rise, while "Headlines" took an expected tumble. This song has been around too long, and "Take Care" still has plenty of mileage. That video will do it wonders.

10.) Wale - "Lotus Flower Bomb" [44]

Yay! A newcomer to our Top 10. This is right around where it peaked (at #38), and with the video already dispensed and performances done, this one probably won't be climbing up any higher. Still, it puts a smile on my face to see J. Cole and Wale getting radio love, after so many people said it wouldn't happen.

11.) Tyga - "Faded" [57]

A Top 10 hit does wonders for your career, as Tyga is probably starting to realize. YM has gone the make-your-second-single-sound-identical-to-your-first route, and it's not a bad tactic. Tyga doesn't have the visibility to just shop any old song, so sticking to the formula will pay off for them. Plus, with a Wayne feature, and a video on the way, look for this one to make some big climbs.

12.) B.o.B - "Strange Clouds" [58]

Mmmm I love this song. I guess the album isn't really on the way, but still, this song is dope. This is eons away from it's peak at #7, but the remix just got a video, which will give it a boost. A return to the Top 10 is very unlikely, however.

13.) Nicki Minaj - "Stupid Hoe" [59]

Well, if you make a video that gets everyone talking, these things happen. This is a rare re-entry to the Billboard Hot 100, meaning this shit came and went already. Still, great marketing by her to pair up with Hype Williams and show off her ass, as this was in the 80s last time it was on the chart. That's a big jump.

14.) Young Jeezy - "I Do" [70]

A lot of people were disappointed in this one, as it was years in the making, and I admit I was underwhelmed on my first listen. I heard "OJ" on the radio yesterday, and it's convinced me I have to grab TM:103, so we'll see if this one grows on me in the coming weeks. I may start bumping it, but it probably won't grow on the radio audience. This is a bottom of the chart song.

15.) Rick Ross - "You the Boss" [73]

It's crazy to think that with all Rozay's success, the high end of the chart has eluded him on solo releases. That and health issues got his album pushed back, which sucks for the fans. But if they can come out with a certified radio jam, to go with his buzz and enormous online prescence, God Forgives, I Don't will do monstrous numbers.

16.) The Throne - "Gotta Have It" [74]

I'm very surprised this is on here, to be honest. Their next single off the album? I highly doubt it. Fuck they have to make a "N-ggas in Paris" video.

17.) The Throne - "No Church in the Wild" [86]

Frank Ocean on the hook, and an absolute banger of a beat. This right here is the song's peak, and even with a video this one couldn't possibly climb that high. Doesn't have the clean-cut radio song formatting that gets you heavy spins on Clear Channel.

18.) Waka Flocka Flame - "Round of Applause" [89]

"Round of Applause" peaked at #86, so it isn't showing a lot of legs, but a new video with Drizzy is sure to change that. It's catchy as fuck, and that video is going to take it to audiences that haven't heard it yet. Watch this one climb.

19.) Diggy - "Do it Like You"

Sooo Diggy still exists. One day this guy might be a big-deal, just not yet.

  1. "Rack City" is wack city. My little sister could make that beat on her easy bake keyboard.
