Well, we can put the speculation to rest, because XXL has finally revealed their XXL Freshmen.
How do you feel about the selections? My thoughts, after the jump.
Welll, you've got Future, which I guess was to be expected. Definitely not my taste in music, but he's buzzing, so what can you do. Kid Ink? Another buzzing guy, but not somebody I've checked out, mostly because of that name. It's a little too, son-of-Wiz-Khalifa for me. Maybe I'll have to listen to him, to see what all the fuss is about, not that XXL picks based on quality. Motherfuckers be buying spots, everybody knows that. French Montana too, the second of the Freshmen who I don't fuck with musically. This guy really annoys me, and is not New York's savior. Keep waiting. I love the Danny Brown selection, though. His momentum just keeps building and building. Hopefully he can be another one of these new-age, weird-rappers that breaks through, like OF and A$AP. I got a buddy in Vancouver that could tell you about Macklemore, but he's there, and I'm here, so I'll just offer up that he's white, and I don't know his music. They got Don Trip, another guy I don't listen to, but I probably should. I've heard good things. Another white guy selection, in the form of Machine Gun Kelly! I don't like his music, but maybe you do. Charlamagne doesn't like his music either. Happy to see Hopsin on there, as he's a dude that actually has a very impressive fan base, but doesn't really get a lot of blog love. He seems poised for a mainstream breakthrough, but hey, I've been wrong before. KWT's latest interviewee, Iggy Azalea made the list here, something we discussed while talking to her. Not surprised about that one. Finally, the odd inclusion of Roscoe Dash. That's an interesting one, as he's been around forever. I imagine that spot was purchased, and that the labels have decided after years of successful hooks, they're going to launch his solo career in earnest. We'll see if that pays off.
I'll throw up some more thoughts later. I'm gonna let this shit pickle. Let us know what you think in the comments. Who should have made the list?
