I'd have to say, overall, I tack a rapper being white on as a deficiency. It's just one of those things. What's that the result of? Is it years of being presented with almost strictly black rappers? Does it have something to do with seeing lots of terrible white rappers? Is it mixture of these two things? I don't really know. I just know for myself, and lots of rap fans, if a rapper is white, he better be able to make up for it. Hip-hop is a universal culture, but it is shaped and controlled by black people. That's a fact.
So with all that said, why do I take issue with the list? White rappers are definitely an easy target, and none are easier than the likes of Riff Raff, Machine Gun Kelly, Kreayshawn, and Chet Haze. To me, they are all cringe-inducing artists, definitely worthy of ridicule. So what's my issue?
I think my qualm is a three-parter. One, I don't like the shots at Hoodie Allen, specifically because they're insulting him for having grown up in the "not very affordable, yet not very cheap suburbs of Long Island" and for being college-educated. I can't be sure, but I'd guess that all members of
Part two of my qualm is with their bashing of Asher Roth. I don't know when, but sometime recently I decided that Asher is pretty dope. Actually, I probably know when, it was sometime between listening to the incomparable (yes) Pabst & Jazz and reading this interview (which turned out to be one of the best interviews I've read in a long time). Their dig at Roth comes when they advertise "you want to hear dudes spit hyper lyrical lyrics about furry hats, beer bongs, bongs, water pipes, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and ping pong[?]". Firstly, I'm happy that your proud of your hipster stylings, which put you above "lyrical lyrics" and put you in the realm of fucking Autotuned rambling. Enjoy your cool points. Secondly, that statement is a weird amalgamation of hearing "I Love College", and hearing about how he raps now. Post Asleep in the Bread Aisle (which I didn't listen to), Asher's spit game isn't about furry hates or PBR. Admittedly, when he dropped, that was the image that was marketed for him. I think in the 3ish years since his debut, he's matured a great deal, and moved out of that lane. Did you hear GRIND? They further shit on him for rapping about inherently "white" things, but why? I am very pleased that he doesn't rap about bullshit he knows nothing about. Asher was the Great White Hope when he came out, partly because he was the first really high-profile white rapper after Em, and also because hey he raps about shit I actually know about. As I said before, I'm not much of a white rapper fan, but attacking somebody for not rapping about what they don't know is stupid.
Finally, the third part of why this list made me want to write out however many fucking words I'm now at, is the whole "white" blog attacking white rappers thing I alluded to earlier. PBR of the Weiss is all about hipster-cool and disaffected-chic. Honestly, I like reading a lot of the shit (the interviews, the retrospectives) but the hipster posturing makes me wrinkle my nose. But whatever, that's their lane, it works well for them, they're not concerned that one guy thinks they're a little too Pitchfork and not enough Droptops and Stacy Lattisaw Tapes. They're the bloggerati, we're Kids Wasting Time. Us and them. I just think a "white" blog taking potshots at white rappers is low, cheap and an unimaginative way to try and bolster your credibility.

I think you are way off on your assumptions about the crew over at PoW. I think the article that prompted you to write this was meant in total fun and jest. Don't take it so seriously. So what if they hated on one or two artists you do like, who doesn't hate on someone you personally like - we all like someone who others don't like, it's music and ears hear things differently.
ReplyDeleteIf you can enjoy the serious journalism that PoW provides an outlet for recognize that they are some jokers and like to have fun as much as they want to expose dope music in a heavy handed way.
What do you think about the actual list of "hottest" rappers they posted shortly after the one that spurred you to hate?
I know what you're saying. Of course it was done in jest. However, I did point out things that exist outside of me liking an artist and them not. I think those points are clear. I really respect the site, and definitely enjoy reading their articles. I just took issue with this post. I quite liked their actual list, and I'll write about it tomorrow, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteIf you read the site, you'd know that no one there is an active fan of Lil B. HL from Lattisaw Tapes is. One of our writers likes Future a lot. So he writes about him. Personally, I like "Space Cadet," and maybe one or two others. It's not something I stress about. I like to promote diversity of thought.
ReplyDeleteI could say a lot of negative things, but honestly, I probably have rap cassettes older than you. You shouldn't take a joke list seriously. And if you want to hype up white rappers, I suggest you check out El-P, Aesop Rock, Edan, old Cage, the Streets, Edan, or new guys like Zilla Rocca and Jonwayne, who are far superior to most of the dudes you're riding for. I don't know how you're going to come off on a high hipster horse when one of your featured albums is a Kid Cudi rap-rock album. Some of my favorite rappers are white, some of my friends even are too. This isn't about color, it's about creativity. It's also about jokes, which you obviously missed.
Thanks for dropping by Jeff! I'm sure you won't make it a habit, but still, we appreciate it. I stand corrected on the preferences of your roster, though I'd like to correct you, and point out WZRD is a featured post, not one of our featured albums. I think that's just because a lot of people checked it out. Those are on the right side, and I don't know who is responsible for them, but they're good selections.
ReplyDeleteI tried to get in my respectful caveats, because I read your stuff religiously, and I check out your site frequently. We'll have to disagree on which white rappers we like.
I was inspired to write, so I did. I didn't miss the jokes, I just wasn't a fan of them. No hard feelings, I'm sure. I liked your guys real list, I'll have to write about it.
As we're talking about white rappers, anyone else reminded of the EL-P vs Sole 'beef' from a little while back?
ReplyDeleteI'll leave it to you to work out who's who
^LOL gaylord
ReplyDeleteNot familiar with this site, but I followed your link form PoW. So I can't help but notice this article reeks of some serious butthurt and you may be rationalizing your own situation by bad mouthing PoW. I have to echo Jeff's sentiments that there are plenty good white rappers or white producers (Constrobuz, to name one) to support, but they are not the ones you are butthurt over. Or this also may just be a publicity stunt, because honestly from my initial appraisal, PoW is on another level from y'all...
ReplyDeleteNot sure why you're such a faggot hipster pussy, or why you used the word butthurt... like more than once..

ReplyDeletealso i am not a faggot hipster pussy, i happen to be a trained chemist, thank you.
ReplyDeleteStill ghey
ReplyDeleteYou're a fucking muppet
ReplyDeleteEat a dick Dan.
ReplyDeleteFuck PBR of the Weiss
Faggot hipster pussy is not a profession, it's your lifestyle. Being a trained chemist doesn't change that.
