It's been a bit. But it's Monday, and I'm back with a Verse of the Day.
As per usual, verse and discussion after the jump.
Am I changing right before your eyes?
Becoming someone you don’t recognize
As if I was disguised, I’m on that shit as if I was the Fly
I’m touchin’ skies, no puffin’ lie
Man these songs that I made in my bedroom and shit
Gon’ finally give a n-gga leg room in the whip
From a Civic to a Chevy must’ve died and went to heaven
Like a passenger on 9/11 — please go find a reverend
You see I promise that I’d never change
But that was way before I made the dough and met the game
Say hello to Miss Thang, I forgot yo name, she yellow
And even white women want a n-gga — Othello
I’m ballin’ with nuggets, like fuck it I’m Carmello
Now the crib got much room -Portobello
She drop it low and then she bust moves for the fellow
I sit yo ass down like you was playin’ a cello
See, you n-ggas hated and I levitated further
Knew I would kill the game, premeditated murder
So if it comes down, may the best man win
No sweat like a head band
Fuck, it's very easy to forget just how great Friday Night Lights was. I guess a lot of people were disappointed with Cole World: The Sideline Story, but I'd say a lot more people loved it. He delivered a strong debut that didn't make many concessions to radio, and ended up breaking into the mainstream, probably in a bigger way than he'd imagined he could. Certainly in a bigger way than Jay imagined he could.
The first verse of standout "Premeditated Murder" finds our college-educated Cole flexing his Shakespeare knowledge, and dropping what has to be the best mushroom-related rap line in the genre's history. He sounds masterful over what is a truly great beat, and, with "man these songs that I made in my bedroom and shit, gone finally get a n-gga leg room in the whip"* kicks a line that really encapsulates who he is, what he represents, and his insatiable hunger.
It's an introspective song, one that finds Jermaine noticing his successes' effect on him, while still refusing to go back to his old ways.
*some people say it's "leg room and a whip" but it doesn't really sound like it to me. Either way, it works.
