Verse of the Day: Azealia Banks - "212"

This song sounds great. I'm not even sure that's up for debate at this point. That's the reason it has 12 million views on Youtube (as well as the fact the video is fun to watch), gets radio rotation in the UK, and has been stuck in my head the past two days. Over a manic, irresistible beat, Azealia employs a futuristic flow to fantastic results.

I don't think I could love this song any more. Sign me up as Azealia's latest stan actually, I ride for this chick heavy. Like, I was this-close to running around the crib today shouting "Fuck you TIP" as she roasted him on the Tweeterz.

...

What were we talking about? Oh yeah, today's Verse of the Day, the first one I've done in fucking ages. I used to love doing these. My apologies. I'm gonna try and get back to doing these consistently. After the jump, the verse, some things I felt I should point out, and a rusty spoon. Okay, not the last one.

Bitch I’m in the 212
With the fifth cock nigga
It's the 2-1 zoo
Fuck you gon' do
When your goons sprayed up
Bet his bitch won't get him
Betcha you won't do much
See, even if you do want to bust
Your bitch'll get cut and touch your crew up to pop
You’re playing with your butter like you do want to cock the gun too
Where you do eat poon, hun?
I'm fucking with ya cutie-q
What’s your dick like homie?
What are you into?
What’s the run dude?
Where do you wake up?
Tell your bitch, "Keep hating"
I'm a new one too, huh
See I remember you when you were the young new face
But you do like to slumber don't you
Now you blew up too hun

Not a single one of the three verses Azealia laced on this track read well in a conventional sense, when laid out as lyrics. I don't mean that as a bad thing.

There's a reason Watchmen was one of Time's 100 Greatest Novels as a comic book, and was an up-and-down popcorn flick as a movie. Similarly, there's a reason Azealia didn't just read out her verse. Try doing that. It sounds ridiculous. In fact, you'll probably find yourself, as I did, reciting it using her cadence, and maybe even her accent. Her performance is that memorable, and integral to the words.

Her immaculate delivery and flawless enunciation turns that jumble of phrases above into one of the hottest tracks of last year. Rapping isn't writing a novel, something should rap better than it's read. Plus, the final four lines are too dope: "See I remember you when you were the young new face, but you do like to slumber, don't you? Now your boo up too, hon. I'ma ruin you cunt".

Female rappers are on the rise, and Azealia Banks is at the forefront. Exciting times, indeed.
