Pac Div Talks Their Style of Music, Grown Kid Syndrome, and "Mayor"

Mibbs, Like, and BeYoung sat down with the good folks over at TheWellVersed to discuss a number of things including their style of music, Grown Kid Syndrome, their Church League Champions single "Mayor," among many other topics. Hit the jump to read it in its entirety.

Pac Div has had fans salivating for the release of their debut album Grown Kid Syndrome ever since they inked a deal with Universal. As one of the benefactors of the internet music boom, Like, BeYoung and Mibbs haven’t exactly gone the same route as their web sensation peers. While most artists remain in the public eye with numerous leaks, videos and even weekly or monthly music series, the Cali trio shun that approach in favor of something more subtle. If you have truly paid attention to Pac Div, you notice that once they drop a project, they disappear from the internet scene. You get no loose ends, no further leaks, no massive campaigns announcing that new music is coming, nothing until they are ready for it. Let Pac Div tell it, they release records in the same manner that high end clothing companies go about dropping their seasonal lines.
“You can always put out music a certain way, but we want to treat our music like Gucci or how a certain clothing line may deal with their clothes,” BeYoung told TheWellVersed when asked why there have been lapses in music. “When they drop their summer, spring or winter line, there won’t be two million advertisements saying ‘Gucci’s New Shit Is Out! Go Get It Now!’ You already associate the quality with the brand and what it stands for.”
Ultimately, the Pac Div product is about quality, not quantity.
“Other brands might print up two million shirts in a year and it’s all in K-Mart and the liquor store,” he continues. “There will be advertisements everywhere. It’s not the same. You don’t get that quality.”
If you’re wondering why Grown Kid Syndrome has taken so long to be released, Pac Div says that it’s not due to label issues. Instead, they are busy building the demand for their product to the point that it has to be unleashed to the public to avoid a riot.

“It’s a different day and age right now so the name Pac Div has to resonate with more people moreso than it has been,” Mibbs says while stating that Grown Kids Syndrome will “hopefully” drop this summer. “You see people like Lil B, he hasn’t even dropped a solo album yet but he has a lot of buzz because of his grind before. That’s what we’re working on right now – the demand. When you come out with music you increase the demand. You definitely want to keep people satisfied.”
When the topic of missed opportunities is brought up, one has to point to the massive buzz that Pac Div’s “Mayor” had when they performed it in front of crowds. The bass heavy, super California single had anthem written all over it. But somehow, Universal didn’t push the song that had the industry talking. For the Cali collective, they won’t cry over spilled milk, but do recognize when an opportunity is missed.
“You’ve gotta look at that as the machine’s fault. That was a hit,” Mibbs says. “We stand by ‘Mayor’ 100%. We knew that it was a hit then and we know now it could still be a hit. But shit happens.”
Make sure to pick up “Mania” here and be on the lookout for Grown Kid Syndrome hopefully being released this summer.
